The wheels would move you to Street Touring Compact (Sedan up to 3.1l) After looking at the rules I think the tranny swap would put you into Street Modified, but I'm not sure on that one.

If the 1989 Cressida itself did not ever have that EXACT wheel diameter/width/offeset available for it, you're no longer in stock class. You can run any wheels, and tires, any weight, as long as the size and offset specs are identical to a stock configuration.

I also agree with Dewey on being quite sure that the trans swap will bump you out of stock class as well. Again, if it wasn't available for the 89 Cressida, yet you have it on yours, it's not in stock class any more.

The grey area for me is if doing a 5 speed swap on my car takes me out of ST class, because my cars exact trim level/year WAS available with a 5 speed, my specific one simply did not come with it.

I knew right away by reading the rules that my class would change. I just wasn't sure on what class I would be put into. The 5 speed thing may or may not happen. I just don't like the auto, So I asked on kindof a whim.
The only trouble I have with the STC class I looked at the results from april first. The subaru did really well for the limited modifications that are allowed (not nocking the car, driver or anything that could mean offense to the guy). So hopefully I can be somewhat competive in the class. It will still be fun regardless of the outcome. Thanks for the help.

For those asking the dB rule at national events is 100dB max. At 97dB you will be given notice of such. You don't need to fix anything until you reach 100. At that point you must attempt a repair and that repair must be approved by the solo steward. If that repair fails you get one more chance. If that repair fails you get yet one more chance. If the third attemp fail you loose that run for the day. The first two runs are counted good. Any repair made must stay in effect the rest of the event includeing the next day. Temp repairs can be replaced with a more adequate repair and then be approved. ie you remove the steel wool from the pipes and put on a better muffler. That must also be approved.

As for the questions about engine mods you can do just about any engine mod you want in prepared except overbore the block.

From the 2012 Solo Rules:
17. Prepared Category
17.10.H.1 The block may be rebored no more than 0.0472" (1.2 mm) over standard. US-produced six-cylinder and eight-cylinder engines may be rebored no more than 0.060" (1.52 mm) over standard.

In Prepared, engine is nearly open. Main restrictions are concerning blocks and critical dimensions such as deck height, cylinder spacing, vee angle, and distance from crank centerline to to cam centerline.

Hopefully somebody can clarify for me what class I'll be in when I run my first event on the 29th. I think it's either CST or CSP (I think those are the designations? It's a CS and either Touring or Prepared.)

I have a 2003 Nissan 350Z with the following performance mods:

Cold air intake
Plenum spacer
Custom oil catch can
Aftermarket sway bars (both)
Camber/toe kit for rear
Coilovers for front and rear

I know the CS part is correct, and I think these mods would put me Touring, but I could be wrong.

Thanks,
Bart

Your plenum spacer will prevent you from being legal for any Street Touring class.

Care to elaborate on what exactly is done for your camber/toe kit?
What kind of tires are you running and what size (diameter & width) wheels are they on?

I will say you likely belong in Street Prepared. Looking at Appendix A in the current rule book, all 350z belong in B Street Prepared (BSP). If you're on street tires, then you'd be a prime candidate for the RTP pax class if you wanted.

Well that's kind of disappointing, lol. I didn't look too close at the engine part of it, I was mainly concerned with the suspension. The camber/toe are adjustable on the rear, from the factory they're not. Fronts are still the factory adjustable.

Wheels are stock, tires at the moment are just all-seasons, not exactly sure what width, 19" diameter if I remember right.

I must have looked at an older stock car class then, I thought I saw C. Long day at work an wasn't thinking straight by then either, lol. I probably will end up running the PAX class in the future then. First event I'm not concerned at all about who I'm up against or where I place, I just want to get the experience and learn as much as I can.

Thanks a lot,
Bart

Don't let it get you down. Many people come into autox with modified cars that don't always fit well in a class. It won't prevent you from having fun and learning how to drive better in the process.

I understand the gist of what it does. The bigger question is how is it implemented? Adjustable arms? offset bushings? modified pickup points?

Ok. then BSP w/ RTP PAX is your best bet for now. Pax classes can be confusing, so if you have further questions, feel free to ask.

CS is the correct stock class for your car. However the letter designations don't carry you up through all the classes. In some cases they do, but the potential of some cars beyond stock is greater than others in the same stock class. So you were thinking straight. :D

That is the right attitude to have for a while. Find out if you like the sport and if it is for you. Determine if it's something you'd like to modify your car specifically for, then decide what class you want to end up in. In some cases, you may want undo some of the modifications on your car so you can step down a class, or even consider an entirely different car.

I would recommend street tires for at least a full season. You will learn much better car control on them.

don't forget to have fun. you're not going to come in and dominate anything even if we handed you the fastest car in the country. Just come in, learn the ropes, have a good time, ask a ton of questions, and make as many friends as you can.
